When You Take Things for Granted for 24 Years…
So there I was, collecting signatures — you can never, ever have enough — for my favorite candidate. As part of my pitch, I said that Jeff was running against John Kerry.
It’s simply amazing to see the antipathy that John Kerry arouses in people — and this was from a liberal enclave outside of the Boston metropolitan area. This even includes members of the Democratic party who still believe in the party’s ideals but no longer see JFK as being worthy of being their standard bearer. As to those who are not Democrats, it’s a widespread case of ABK. (Or as we like to say here — Any-Beatty but Kerry.)
We’re used to getting the anti-Kerry spin when we travel in GOP circles — that’s to be expected. However, in a neutral setting (a transfer station in fact) we were surpised to see the level of resentment aroused by simply mentioning Senator Kerry’s name.
I suggest to those who think that this is a safe seat — you may want to reconsider your assessment.
Take Your CQ with a Grain of Salt
Credit the Washington media types for getting things wrong — way wrong — in the Bay State. Check out the three whoppers that were found on the web today from the folks who should know a thing or two about politics:
Spook candidate challenges Swiftboater: Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry , the 2004 Democratic presidential standard-bearer, suddenly has some real opposition, it looks like — and somebody cut from similar cloth. Republican Jeff Beattyhas held a number of national security slots: Army Delta Force in Somalia, hostage rescue ops at the FBI and counterterrorism missions with the CIA, among others. Now he’s snuck up on the presumed GOP frontrunner for the nomination, former Air Force Lt. Col. Jim Ogonowski. According to the Boston Herald’s analysisof new federal campaign filings, “security guru and former Delta Force soldier Jeff Beatty has raised $1 million, far eclipsing the $307,000 collected by Ogonowski.”
1. Jeff was involved, as a Delta Force officer, with the resuce of American medical students in Grenada in 1983. Somalia was ten years later.
2. Who has ever said that Jim Ogonowski is the presumed GOP front runner? In the last election that Jeff and Jim competed in — Jeff received almost twice as many votes against a stronger opponent than Jimbo. Moreover, when people vote with their pocketbook — Jeff wins 10 to 3? Lastly, if Mr. Ogonowski was a front runner why doesn’t he debate Jeff and “finish him off.”
3. On what planet could John Kerry and Jeff Beatty be considered cut from the similar cloth? Jeff has remained faithful to his fellow veterans and worked his way up through the ranks of the Army, the FBI, and the CIA. He then founded and led his own security consulting fim. We know sadly how Kerry feels about veterans and since he graduated from law school he has been a professional politician.
The lesson — the folks inside the Beltway need to come down to the Bay State and get a clue as to what is going on.
Getting Praise for Doing Nothing
John Kerry pats himself on the back for his 100% rating from the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. The name of the organization sounds impressive but it’s as liberal an organization as one can find. (Don’t take my word for it — check it out yourself.)
Oddly enough, the biggest issue among the voters throughout the commonwealth — based on our travels throughout the state — has been illegal immigration. (It’s of greater concern than national security and the economy — although illegal immigration actually impacts both.)
The hopelessly out-of-touch Kerry is praised for having … “supported comprehensive immigration reform (and) backs the DREAM Act, which helps undocumented children attend college and apply for citizenship. In plain English, he supports an amnesty and wants taxpayers to pay for illegal aliens (er, undocumented children) to attend college. So much for playing by the rules, huh?
Ironically, JFK gets kudos for doing absolutely nothing (which says as much about the LCCR as it does anything else) as the junior Senator …”led the filibuster against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s confirmation; opposed the nomination of Chief Justice John Roberts; and opposed Attorney General Michael Mukasey’s appointment because of his refusal to deem water-boarding torture.” (To say those three men are against civil rights further supports the concept of the LCCR as nothing more than a partisan organization.)
So let’s keep score — he casts three meaningless votes since he was on the losing side — against two Supreme Court justices and the Attorney General. BTW, how long did that filibuster last — half a nanosecond?
Give the junior senator some credit – he’s the only one with the cojones to tell the people of the commonwealth that he’s out of touch and ineffective and get praised for it too!

Ron Paul Had Better Luck
After a month plus, an Internet effort to raise funds for Jim Ogonowski’s campaign has raised $195 from five donors.
A Lost Dog
Kerry Knows Something We Don’t?
In today’s Boston Herald, we learn that John F. Kerry, the junior senator from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, has earned the most (compared to his fellow Senators) from investment in defense contractors – at least $2.6 million between 2004 and 2006 from investments worth up to $38.2 million. I’ll cut to the chase — that’s a hefty chunk of change from an investment!
In fairness to the Senator, his spokesman, David Wade, said Kerry staunchly opposes the war in Iraq (and this windfall) is one of many beneficiaries of family trusts that he doesn’t control. Wade also noted that Kerry does not sit on the Appropriations Committee, which has direct control of the defense budget. Of course Mr. Wade doesn’t note that the Senator was in favor of the war before he was against it. Moreover, who is saying that his investments are directly impacted by the war in Iraq?
Mr. Wade further noted that Senator Kerry has a 24-year Senate record of working and voting in the best interests of our men and women in the military, not of any defense contractors.
Mr. Wade forgets one noticeable exception:
In September 2003, Kerry implied that voting against wartime funding bills was equivalent to abandoning the troops.
“I don’t think any United States senator is going to abandon our troops and recklessly leave Iraq to whatever follows as a result of simply cutting and running,” he said.
Then, in October 2003, a year after voting to support the use of force in Iraq, Kerry voted against an $87 billion supplemental funding bill for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. He did support an alternative bill that funded the $87 billion by cutting some of President Bush’s tax cuts.
But when it was apparent the alternative bill would not pass, he decided to go on record as not supporting the legislation to fund soldiers.
Kerry complicated matters with his now infamous words, “I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it.”
But here’s the kicker — remember that infamous interview he gave just a couple of weeks ago in the Gloucester Daily Times?
Senator Kerry said: “Defense contractors have been evading paying taxes by funneling federal payments through shell companies in the Cayman Islands.”
Well, if he was truly concerned about tax-evading defense contractors, shouldn’t he just dump his $38.2 million investment? But then John Kerry wouldn’t be John Kerry if he did.
More Jeff — This time with video!
